An engine house was built in the workhouse garden in North Street, apparently in 1823; this was retained when the workhouse was sold in 1840. A volunteer brigade supported by the local board, was formed in 1890. A new fire station was built in Mawney Road. It remained in use until 1960, when Essex county council, which had taken over the brigade after the Second World War, opened a new station in Pettits Lane North |
